Nothing wrong with keeping the car near-original. I do the same thing...but I choose not to obsess about it. I'm not indicating that you are; I just know that many folks can...and do.
When someone finds the existence of the "Holy Grail of Corvette-dom", I'm sure we will be notified -- and offered to receive our 'share' for a SMALL stipend...
I suggest that you just investigate the intricacies of your car's configuration (tach redline, differences in engine accessory configuration, suspension differences, and factory markings that you can identify) to deduce how it was "born". That's probably as good as you can do. Enjoy the 'mystery' and enjoy your car.

Good advice. Whoever the original owner was wanted luxury. PW, PB, PS, A/C, Stereo, Leather, Louvers, Alarm, Turbo 400, but was happy with the base engine. I'm getting a repaint now. I'd like making it look like the yellow ZL1, but not going there. I enjoy keeping to original as much as possible.
I'm afraid you're right - I will likely never have documentation evidence that what I have is original, but I hope keeping her original and having matching numbers will still preserve some value. I certainly enjoy the car and have decided to repaint in the original Daytona Yellow even though it's not my favorite color. It sure would be nice to find out who the original owner was somehow. It was purchased in November 1969 in the SF Bay Area.
So what I decided to do the other day (probably a fools errand) to try to find out a bit more about mine is to ask around the Arizona Corvette Clubs. Folks have been very kind and are posting my request on their email blasts to see if anyone knows the car.
