Its an amp meter so it reads how many amps are being used by the car. Mine was almost always at the 0 or into the negative, especially with the radio I installed. I wanted to keep it just for the nostalgia, but I got stranded once when My alternator support bolt sheared and I lost the alternator belt. It also cost me the water pump function since its on the same belt. I didnt have the single top to bottom bolt at the time. Theres not much you can do other than make sure its functioning by turning on all your accessories like lightsm the wipers, fans, radio, and see how far into the negativve it goes. If it doesnt move then you need to trouble shoot it. It doesnt have a ground as it is inline with the battery. One wire comes off your voltage regulator to the meter, the other goes back to the battery. If you have a good wiring diagram, you can trace it. I would get a diagram that is color coded so you can trace wires easier.
After my incident i purchased the correct colored volt meter so I can see my battery health which is more important and a better diagnostic tool. Check Willcox's site for trouble shooting tips.
thank you, but my gauge is pegged too the neg side at all times with the key on or off.. it does not move with a draw one way or the other! so i think the gauge it self is bad?
My gauge did the same thing/melted the winding where it attaches to one of the rear wire terminals/soldered it together/POOF= same problem on engine start-up.
It seems Amp gauges do not "play well" with 130 amp alternator upgrades.
