looking at the wire connectors, I would say it
s not stock. Looks like a relay.

Could it be that the OEM connector melted because of a short and the P.O. replaced the relay and connector with aftermarket parts (I'm making a guess without a good wiring diagram)?

That is an aftermarket relay that looks to be part of an anti-theft system.

4 crimp connectors, but I only see 3 wires. If it is a relay, it isn't doing much.

See if you can trace where the wires go. It may well be a standard automotive relay, like the diagram below (If it only has 4 spades, terminal 87a, normally closed, has been omitted).

Thats why I think is was originally an anti theft relay. The purple wire is probably to the starter. You can see an open connector. My theory is one of the purple wires used to go to the open connector, but some PO cut it and crimped to the other purple wire so the car would start. Who ever that PO was did some Bubba work.

Sounds plausible. It was bypassed just like so many clutch safety switches. Perhaps Bubba thought he was going to get around to fixing it one day.

Well the official name- "Stater Interrupt Module"-

That's why they sold for a lot more than a "Bosch style relay!!!"

It look like is has been jumped- but not really well.

I'd disconnect the battery- peel back the tape-then trace the wires-

Might find a momentary switch-and probably a wire tapped off the ignition.
And you'll want to make a more permanent connection of the two purple wires- as that could lead to a no start situation.

Let us know!!!

Momentary switch- usually something similar to this
