Does it happen to go into gear after sitting and waiting with the clutch pressed in for a while? My guess would be that the first gear synchro is a bit worn and is having trouble slowing down the input shaft enough to get everything meshing.

With the engine off, pressing down on the clutch pedal with your hand, do you have a liitle more than 1 inch of movement before you feel it stop?

If it has been sitting a long time maybe the clutch disc is stuck to the flywheel

Your clutch plate is stuck to the fly wheel. Rust.

Put it in first and turn the key. Car will jump forward and may pop the disk lose. Use caution. It may take a couple try's.

With the engine off - Can you put the car in first or reverse - depress the clutch pedal - start the car?
OR does it lurch forward/backward?
if it lurches with the clutch pedal depressed the disk is stuck to the flywheel -
You should be able to fire the engine off with the pedal depressed and the trans in any gear.
