Default Fat Tire Question

I need new tires. The rears currently are 255/60-15 and fronts, for some reason are 245/60-15. I noticed the front wheels are 7" and rears are 8". Not sure why this was done but I'd like to go with a bit wider front and rear.

I'm pretty sure I can put a 255/60-15 on the front 7" wheel.

What would be a wider tire that can go on the 8" rear wheel (without rubbing)? The current tires are between 25" and 26" tall. I'd like to keep the same height or maybe just a tad taller is okay.

This photo shows how the fronts are way too narrow and too far in the fender.

Your car should have 8" wide wheels at all 4 corners. I think only 68s came with 7" wheels.

I have 255/60R15s on stock aluminum wheels (N90 or YJ8) on both of my C3s.

Do a search on the Forum. I think folks have put 275/60R15 tires on the rear without issues. I'm not a fan of the different sized tire look, so I haven't tried. There are also folks running 18" wheels and keeping the (stock) 27" tire diameter.

I can't imagine why anyone would put 7" rims on the front of a later C3. Makes no sense to me....

255/60-15 all the way around makes for easy tire rotation. That was an option size supplied by Chevy, too.

I also don’t care for the different sized tire look. My ‘69 came with 275 on 9” rims in the rear and 245 on 8” rims in the front, both 17” with 4” backspacing. I now have 255/45-18 on 8.5” rims with 4.5” backspacing (27.1” diameter) and everything fits and looks good.

The three key measurements you need to manage are tire width, tire diameter and wheel backspacing.
