When daylight driving my '79, the gauges were all operating correctly. Coming home in the evening with my headlights or parking lights on, all my gauges suddenly quit working. When the lights were turned off, the gauges went back to normal again. The car seemed to run fine with no issues regardless of lights on or off. Could it be a grounding issue? If so, where should I look?
Thanks, Psychovette
Have you tried turning your headlight **** to adjust instrument lights? It goes from dome light on , full brightness an gauges, to off ..
assuming you are talking background lights not all the gauges literally not working
if they quit working do they go to zero all of them? Or?

This is a grounding issue. More specifically a POOR grounding issue.
There is an old saying about current:
It will flow the easiest path with the least resistance. So in this case, there is not enough juice to go around. Something has to forfeit.
One or the other lights had to stop working.
Where to look for a poor GRD? IDK. I 'am 90% sure it s NOT the battery NEG cable to frame. I think its another GRD wire / strap that is corroded just enough to cause this issue.
Maybe someone else knows where the headlights and dash lights GRD wire is.

Thanks for the advice! I'll try looking for the faulty ground(s) starting with the alternator. The interior & instrument dimmer wasn't affected. I guess I'll have to keep looking. Could it be the gauge panel ground or possibly the main ground strap to the frame?
