I live in a state that does not require emissions.
I would like to get rid of my catalytic converter. It generates so much heat under the passenger.
Has anybody done this? If so, how did you replace the space in the exhaust system
1. $. I have spent my budget. Maybe in the future.
2. I understand if you currently have single exhaust, to go to dual exhaust you need to buy another cross bracket. Then see # 1

I also have a 1980, and did replace the converter with a test pipe I purchased on eBay. It is a direct bolt on. I also removed the cat converter heat shield. I currently do not see the corvette test pipes on eBay. You could remove your cat converter and take it to an exhaust shop for them to duplicate the dimensions and flanged fittings with a straight pipe.
I did find, without the converter, the exhaust system is a bit louder and sounds better.
If you decide to increase your budget, Corvette Central sells a dual exhaust system that fits a 1980 with the stock crossmember.
Take it to a local muffler shop and have them remove the CAT and insert a piece of transfer pipe. Tell them they can keep the CAT (they can get a few $$ for it).
I thought that even if you were in a state that did not require emissions, shops were not allowed to remove emission related items, such as a catalytic converter, from the car.
just a thought.

That is why in my reply, I suggested taking the cat converter to an exhaust shop, for them to duplicate the measurements when bending a pipe, so they are not working on a car.
op.. i was in same boat.. although yours has a different crossmember compared to previous years.. i like the idea of the taking cat off (not that easy) and taking for measurements.. and flange (s)...
even test pipes were not cheap on ebay (when they had them)..i also like the recovery of $ on cat.. call around see what it is worth.. it is the old platinum *****..then see what your budget is..
go true duals if you can..
see the above advice where to buy and also i bet Allen's in Indiana can sell you what you need..(yours not same as 79 at crossmember) Exhaust option questions please 79 4speed - CorvetteForum - Chevrolet Corvette Forum Discussion

If you do have a test pipe made at a shop, supply your own flanges. http://nickson.com/
Here are both 2.25" & 2.50" part numbers for the 4 bolt GM cat flange.
Different numbers back when I purchased mine but same 2.50" flange #SF043.

I got my test pipe from eBay a couple years ago for my my black 80 L82 and was the first thing I did, knocks about 35 pounds of weight off , I ended up side pipes but recently bought a white 1980 L82 all stock and just yesterday installed it on that one , if I recall correctly it was 50.00 on eBay back 2019
