my 75 is the same way. cap perfectly centered under the alt mount. so, is the consensus a longer or shorter belt?

Loosen the adjustment bolts and move it to the limits of the travel in both directions. See witch way works best for YOUR car. Buy belt to fit.
That's what i'm going to do as soon as I get time. I have to change pump anyway. I was told to move it in. That looks more doable on MY CAR.
A lot of people here say move it out. I've seen several different setups on these things so I don't know what to believe. I'm going with the old trial and error method.
Luckily I have a huge stash of belts hanging on the wall so I should be able to narrow it down pretty quickly and cheaply.

How did so many cars get the wrong belt installed? There must have been some wrong info in the old parts interchange books or something.

GM Parts Catalog. P/S belt size 7/16" x 36". My 72 uses the same part number belt.

No problem removing the P/S cap.
Hope this helps.

That is a great shot and great info. I ordered one just now, although I could not find that particular part#. Knowing the length was great!

The belt I shown above, 11mm × 925 mm converts to 7/16ths × 36.4 inches. this swings it out. dip stick is relatively easy to get out. But not with a hot engine.
