1972 C3 - color combo frequency
Hi! Just bought a 72 with Pewter Silver (924) exterior and Red (407) interior. I know 5% were Pewter already, but do you know (or can you direct me to locate) the number of this combo produced that year?
Unfortunately, the records correlating specific options do not exist. The best you can do is an educated guess based on the percentages.
This site quickly shows what interior colors were available with what exteriors (there are lots of other useful information at the next level up). http://corvettec3.ca/interior.htm
Classic White and Pewter Silver were the only colors available with every interior color.
VetteFacts, and many other sites, have the production numbers. The interior information is missing, but it is likely that less than 2% of all 72s came with Pewter Silver over Red. http://vettefacts.com/C3/1972.aspx
Please post some photos of your ride! You have a great color combination, especially for a chrome bumper car.

Jo J,
Welcome to the forum. Lots of great info here. I learned a bunch about my 72 from the folks here.
That is not a combo you see everyday. It looks awesome. Love that red interior.
Best of luck with the new ride.

You can only estimate based on production numbers.
Fortunately for you 1972 is one of the only years to breakdown options by body style (coupe/conv)
So, of the 20469 coupes produced 1072 were pewter and 969 coupes came with red interior.
From that you can estimate that roughly 50 pewter w/red interior coupes were produced though the number is likely higher as the red interior was recommended with only 40% of available exterior colors.

Hi Fred,
That is SO helpful! Thank you! Can you tell me where you located the number of interior colors for the year? I’ve found everything except that so far...including 13-digit “carfax” and such.

Thank you Fred! I have not been able to get to this specific guide, but I’m gonna keep trying. I don’t give up easy when it comes to unearthing useful docs on all our projects!
Pewter was the exterior color with lowest production numbers in 1972; and only 3 interior colors would [normally] go with the Pewter exterior: Black, saddle and red. There may have been some Pewter w/white interiors that were special ordered. I suspect that there were quite a few red interiors with Pewter paint. Black interior was likely the favorite interior with that color.

Interestingly enough (at least as far as Jo's car is concerned), along with Pewter Silver being the least used exterior color in 1972, red was the least used interior color, on only 1,481 cars. And as others have pointed out, there are no records that show the breakdown of exterior/interior color choices.

I have never seen a Pewter Silver/White Interior or a 72 with white interior in any Color.
