I have a problem with my 75 Corvette, the engine just stops while I'm driving. I coast off the road, wait for 30 seconds to a minute and it starts back up. Have had it to several mechanics but no oner has been able to diagnose the problem. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This has been an ongoing problem for 3+ years.
timing light. have it with you or better yet stashed under the hood hooked up. as soon as it quits, squeeze trigger on timing light and crank engine. no flash? ignition. replace the coil and the module. usually throwing parts at something is wasteful, but these are old parts that get intermittant and relatively cheap. if you let it idle at home will it do it?
There's only two things it can be. Fuel or spark. When it quits, remove the air cleaner and look down the carb. Operate the throttle and look to see if you are getting two solid streams of fuel into the primary venturis. If not, its a fuel problem. If you do, its probably spark.
Instead of carrying an expensive peace of diagnostic equipment around, especially under the hood to get its circuitry trashed and wires melted.
On EBay and at some automotive stores is a Sparkplug Test Lite, $3.99
Remove any plug-wire from the distributor cap and install "inline" the tester. You will know instantly if you have ignition or not by cranking and observing.

Have the mechanics you've taken it to already replaced anything? The HEI module is low-hanging fruit, and it's worthwhile to carry a spare. If not that, perhaps a loose electrical connection that is heat dependent.
In addition to the great advice above, bring a multimeter with you, and check voltage to the distributor. Does your 75 have an aftermarket (or stock) alarm system, or any non-stock wiring under the dash or in the engine compartment?
Please post some photos, especially with the air cleaner assembly removed. You'd be surprised what some Forum members can spot.
