What do you guys recommend after break in oil ...I have a new ATK 350 high performance engine and I've just turned a thousand miles.... 10w30, 10w40, or I was thinking straight sae40..... I'm thinking 40 because I live in Central Florida so we don't get much winter.
ask the people who built it. brand new factory engines are such close tolerances that 0-30 or 5-30 is the correct stuff. wider bearing clearances need somewhat heavier oil.
If you have a relatively new engine, putting anything other than full synthetic oil in it is foolish. The improvement in lubricity, reduced wear on metal parts, etc. etc. is so much better with full synthetic, it's a "no-brainer" to use it. To my knowledge EVERY modern-day car maker recommends (or requires) synthetic oils for their engines. There is a reason for that: they like to minimize their warranty costs, which synthetic oils will do.
I agree about the synthetic oil after breakin or 4-5,000 MILES. Engine manufacturer suggests 10w30 10w40 non synthetic... but no specific brand. I think I'm leaning towards Valvoline racing oil conventional 10w30. ATK recommends a zinc additive until the engine is broken in, even though I have a roller cam.
Thick (40 wt) is old school and not recommended.
Break in oil, if you have a roller cam, is old school and not needed.
Most/all newer cars come with thinner synthetic oils and break in just fine.
I have run 5w30 synthetic in my flat tappet '69 BB for at least 10 yrs after running dino oil for the first 4/5 yrs without any problems. No zinc additives.
Just do what bruiser said.
