So what is the date in which old threads are closed when reserrected? Some of the more technical threads are still relevant today just as much as 10,15, 20 years ago are they not? So many times us old members tell the noobs to do a search on a topic and bring back an old topic that could help other noobs. I get it if the info is out of date but a "how to" or something like that should be allowed to continue to stay alive. Am I wrong? Just wondering.....
well, this ain't the place for questions but, usually they get closed if the OP requests it or if the pics don't work anymore. We have no specific criteria to just close a thread for no reason.
if you see something closed and you think it should be active let us know. We agree that some stuff is relevant no matter how old.
Just an observation, but I notice the ones that get locked seem to be where someone is asking, or answering questions that were last posted many years ago.
From my perspective, old threads tend to not get closed if the OP or another poster resurrects them with new relevant information. They do get closed when someone resurrects an old thread just to tell the OP how to fix something he took care of 15 years ago.
Much of the problem is due to the "related threads" that show up at the bottom of a thread you are reading. Too many folks accidentally scroll past the end of the thread and end up in a related thread. The related thread tends to be older and then they post based on the original thread they thought they were in. I'd like to see related threads go completely away. It's too easy to search for info on the forum to need related threads. It's especially annoying when a related thread is from one of the other forums like C7.
There is another issue with resurrecting old threads even when the info is relevant. Far too many folks just read the thread title and part of the first post before they rush to respond and they never bother to check the date. So, they end up responding unnecessarily and it gets the purpose of the thread resurrection off track.
When in doubt about resurrecting an old thread, I'd just start a new thread and then provide a link to the old thread for reference.
If this was my forum to run, I'd automatically close threads after a certain period of inactivity but allow the OP to resurrect them at any time. I would also allow moderators to resurrect old threads when they get a reasonable request to do so.
yes. some old threads are acceptable. update on your build thread. you want to add your red car to the red vette thread, fine. usually it is a newbie joining to ask a question he googled and found here. and then there are related threads.
we all occasionally screw up and reply to an old thread we are researching. that is what delete post is for. in about 2 years, lets pull this thread back up and see if it gets locked...

All good points. I was not setting out to site bash but to find out what causes a thread to be closed. Thanks for everyone's input and MODs, please close this if you want.
The information contained in the older threads were submitted over the years by true experts! Too many of these early CF Corvette enthusiast/experts have left for one reason or another but their fingers typed some incredible information and instructions.
Edited: Not allowing a continued conversation/input and or locking the threads it's like burning books!
These threads are the most valuable asset CF has earned!

A locked thread does not mean that it's not viewable, just that you can't add to it. Too many times I see a thread resurrected from many years ago, and somebody (usually with thousands of posts), answers the ORIGINAL question without even reading the thread...

The best and most direct way to find out about a rule you do not understand or, as in this case, a policy more than a rule, is to PM an Admin or a section Moderator.
