Small town alignment discount
I intentionally had a little (~1/16") toe out set on the front with the intention of doing a few track days and the twitchy steering was kind of fun around town. Now that I have moved the '68 to my rural property, I find the twitchiness on rural roads a little frightening, so I decided to put it on my lift and do a small toe adjustment. In what could be it's own story in a "dumb things I've done" thread, I botched it badly. So I pull out the strings and after some precision tweaking I get it to where the front tires aren't squealing as I roll on and off the lift. Then I drive to the tire shop in the two traffic light small town nearest my place and ask them if they can do an alignment on it. They had a new-ish digital Hunter alignment rack but the boss says his alignment man can't set the front caster or camber because he doesn't have any shims and hasn't done a setup like our vettes in long time. So I ask him to check the alignment all around and reset the front toe. The alignment guy is very meticulous and wants me to double check that I'm good with the settings. If I knew how to use the Hunter, I'm pretty sure he would have let me do it myself. When he's done, I ask how much? He said they usually charge $100 for an alignment, but the boss is good with $50 if I do a "smoky burnout" in the parking lot. I couldn't pass on the offer to have a little fun and save $50.
