I just installed the interior of my 72 and my rebuild is nearing completion! One problem that I noticed is that when I try to shift into reverse, the shifter hits the center console and does not go over to the left far enough to get into gear. I had to smack the shifter over to the left very hard to go in. Everything seems lined up very well and I don't understand what the problem is. Any thoughts?
Does it have plenty of room from the bottom of the shifter cutout for 2 and 4, like the shifter is just too far forwards? Is your center console all the way forward?
Is this a new shifter? If so you have the shift lever on backwards. I had that problem on my '72 when I bought it. I swapped the off-set lever around and everything was fine. If not then I have no idea what else could be the problem..

I don’t know what to tell you this is what fixes the problem I have done it 5 times if you keep using it the way you are you gonna dent up the shift box area
Cabman I might be wrong cause I can’t even see to matching socks out of the sock drawer, but from your picture it looks to me like the console might be somewhat off center. Just my .02

If the shifter is installed correctly, try to loosen the transmission mounting bracket and see of there is any side to side adjustment in your mount. You can shift the transmission to the right if there is. My mount has the slots for adjustment. My bet is the shifter is either in 180 off or the clamp is on the wrong side. If thats the only problem you have then you are looking good because its an easy solve mostly, except for getting under the car
Is that the Southern Car Parts stock appearance shift **** for Hurst shifters? Is the base offset, and could you turn it around? If not, perhaps you just need a shim (washer?) between the Competition Plus shift assembly, and the lever (at the two bolts, circled).
I failed to take pictures when I replaced my lower shift boot/bellows, but you may be able to do this from above.
I'm hoping I have the adjustment at the tail shaft like Rescue Rodgers mentioned. That would be by far the easiest fix. I'm pretty sure the shifter was reassembled correctly. It looks the same in both pics.

I slotted the rubber trans mount and slid the tranny about 1/4"-5/16" to the right and I can now shift to reverse. Its still very close so I'm thinking I'll shim the rod a little more. Thanks everyone for your ideas and suggestions. I post pics when its done!
