‘77 Column Reassembly Question

I must be missing something…

When I pulled this apart to rebuild it I used the U-shape tool to depress the lock plate and slide the clip out. Now that I’m trying to get this back together I am noticing that the inside rod (w/key & pin) simply slides in/out of the other steering rod (w/knuckle). How do I use this tool that threads onto the inside rod to compress the lock plate??? It just slides out.

Do you have the long thin Tele shaft inserted? It doesn't look like it in the picture. It needs to be in for the tool to work.

I do. Here is a pic. One thing I wasn’t sure about is the key itself. It does have a flat on it and I assume it is for the pin to hit against?

If it’s a telescoping column, don’t you have to thread something like an Allen head screw into the threads of the inner hole, to lock it?

A 1/4-20 bolt locks up a tilt/tele set-up. Cut off the head and slot the end for screw

1/4-20 bolt
driver or grab with vice grips.

That did the trick! Thank you guys. Overall, not so bad of a job. Next step is to get it back in and make sure everything works - lol!
