Default Disturbing issue

The key in my '69 (that I've had over four months!) won't turn the ign. to LOCK, so anyone can start the car without a key. Could this have anything to do with the Tremec 5-speed installed by the previous owner? Non-tilt/tele. wheel, if that helps.

Is the shift lock cable still hooked up ? Look at steering column, under hood , coming out of firewall , the arm coming out of the column should be all the way up .With this arm up you will be able to turn key /ign switch to lock .

use a tie-wrap or something to hold it up.

Can you still make use of the intended shift-lock system, using the 5-speed?
If you get a new interlock cable, it will ensure:
- Must be in R to get the key out and locked
- If the key is out and locked, you can't get the trans out of R

Pretty decent safety and security functions if you get it working properly.

Only the ignition switch and steering are locked with the key out; I can still shift it. I don't see anything coming out of the firewall, just the lever on the column.

The interlock cable attaches that lever to the trans underneath at the reverse linkage.

That's pretty far down the list of stuff to do; maybe "someday". Thanks for the info!

It won't work on a Tremec.
There are no external shift levers to attach the cable to.

No problem - I can live with just the steering and switch locked.
