The key in my '69 (that I've had over four months!) won't turn the ign. to LOCK, so anyone can start the car without a key. Could this have anything to do with the Tremec 5-speed installed by the previous owner? Non-tilt/tele. wheel, if that helps.
Is the shift lock cable still hooked up ? Look at steering column, under hood , coming out of firewall , the arm coming out of the column should be all the way up .With this arm up you will be able to turn key /ign switch to lock .
Can you still make use of the intended shift-lock system, using the 5-speed?
If you get a new interlock cable, it will ensure:
- Must be in R to get the key out and locked
- If the key is out and locked, you can't get the trans out of R
Pretty decent safety and security functions if you get it working properly.

Only the ignition switch and steering are locked with the key out; I can still shift it. I don't see anything coming out of the firewall, just the lever on the column.

The interlock cable attaches that lever to the trans underneath at the reverse linkage.
