Hi all, I'm Thinking about replacing my body mounts on my 73 this winter. The right side #4 reinforcement cage also needs replacement. My first question, are there any/many obvious, "while I'm at it", side projects that i should budget for while tackling this? Second question, poly or rubber ?
Thanks for the help
first see if you can detach all 8 mounts. this job is usually a nightmare. once you get them all loosened, consider the fuel line from tank to engine. the other thing you can do is remove all 8 mounts, remove everything else, lift body about 4 feet up, and rebuild every damn thing under the body. how's that for while you are at it?
Hoping to avoid going quite that high with it, but yeah, that's what I'm afraid of ! The car is fairly clean with what i would call an older refurbish. The bolts don't look terrible. The driver's side # 2 is a little iffy, but I'm going to hold onto my cautious optimism for as long as i can.
Start by soaking threads with WD or similar. They have a can with a long flex straw that will get in to odd places. The #2-3 mount nuts are in a welded cage above the frame and below the body. #4 is sheet metal cage that is gonna spin. You just cut bolt heads and drive the bolt up into the trunk area. Big pain with converts as the back deck hinge and spring is mounted on top of that hole. Coupes easy to get to.
Invest in a can or 2 of AeroKroil in lieu of PB Blaster. I found them cheapest on Amazon @ $32/16 oz can, but well worth saving some aggravation.
Also, plan on replacing fuel lines and brake lines “while you’re in there”.
Thanks, it's a coupe. I was thinking about putting it off but i guess I'll start soaking those bolts this weekend & order some parts. Unfortunately, I'm in NY so i have until at least April
to get some work done.
This is my ‘64, but same concept. I lifted it about 10” one side at a time.
Yeah, a little overkill but safety first! Remove all the bolts one the side you will jack up and loosen them all on the other side. This is mount #1 on the passenger side after lifting the passenger side about 10”. I cleaned and painted the frame and sealed the inside of the frame, and replaced the fuel line and rear brake line. I discovered this on the driver side, my rear brake line completely crushed, so it was replaced. This is #4 on the passenger side when I was finished. Interestingly, both #4 bolts had fallen out and were missing!
Thanks for the pics factoid. Looks like you place the wood for jacking right up under the rocker channel outside of the frame ? Will be nice to have some new hardware under there. The painted frame looks nice also.
