Default 82 u-joint shields

I am in the process of restoring my 82's trailing arms. One thing I noticed missing are the plastic u-joint shields. I have the holes for where the screws would go but no shields. My 82 is an early build (my engine is blue). Where the shields a later build thing or could a previous owner have removed them?

I have never seen what you are referring to.
Do you have a link to what these shields look like?

There is a set for sale on eBay right now. I don’t see how they would be necessary.

Only thing I could think of is that is that GM had an issue with those star bolts on the 80-81 corroding fast.

I am not worried I don't have them. Just that my car was very original, it even had the original tires so I thought it odd they weren't there. Now that I disassembled the trailing arm I've found two distant types of grease on the inner bearing so it looks like someone was here before. So I am kind of thinking the previous owner also figured what's the use of putting them back on.

Brush, Howdy.

They were/are supposed to be there on all 82's

Backstory; These are splash shields, They are tubular plastic (ABS) and hold on to the spindle carrier with 4 bolts. Imagine warrantee and reliability in MINNESOTA for the guy who has to drive his Vette in the schnizzle. They kept (to some extent) salt from getting into the outer U joints. (saying nothing about the inner ones!)

For a restorer, occasional driver, garage kept hangar queen...they are pretty much un-necessary. in fact I think they are more of a hinderance than a benefit. You cannot see into them easily to determine how much 'gutch' is in there. Then when servicing or checking the star bolts and caps, you have to unbolt them and slide them up the axle.

I have categorized all C-3 parts available (applicably) to the C-3. Neither CA nor CC stock this part. This is falling into the 'unobtaium' category.

Don't fret, other than NCRS, you're loosing nothing!

cheers Unkahal

Since you're rebuilding your arms there should also be an external 030" shim under the yoke.

Yes, I found that during disassembly and was not expecting that. It was caked in grease with makes me think someone did the external grease injection method? I made a note of it to make sure it's returned there when I am finsihed.
