Performing some maintenance on my 72 over the course of a few weeks and when I got it off the stands and started it, the interior courtesy lights stayed on all the time. One of the things I did was install a new headlight switch, which required me to loosen part of the drivers side dash as well as remove the driver side kick panel. So I figured maybe I knocked a wire off the lamp switch. Check wires on both switches and they were fine. Headlamps work fine. I don’t have a wiring diagram so found one online from Wilcox for 77-82 and noticed the courtesy lights are tied in with the headlamp switch. So I went out and pulled the headlamp switch **** in and out a few times and presto! the courtesy lights went out. Hope it keeps working. It was a pain changing that switch.
I was going to guess that the headlamp switch was turned all the way clockwise or counterclockwise, causing the interior lights to remain on. Glad you got it 'fixed'.
When it's dark in your garage. Turn on your lights. you will find by rotating the headlight switch the the dash lights can be dimmed turning one way, and go brighter the other way. unless of course someone decided to put LED bulbs in. Then game over. and as stated above, if you rotate all the way untill it clicks. I forget which way but all the way to the stop while rotating, the courtesy lights come on and stay on. all cars where like this back in the day. You must be young.
Actually I’m 67. I completely forgot about how the old school switches operate. The car is 100% stock and low mileage. Thanks for confirming. I wonder how long it’s been since new cars had this feature.
Well I'll be dipped, didn't think you where an old guy. Yup all cars would dim the dash lights and turn on the interior lights with the main light switch. When did they stop doing this. I really don't know. Haven't bought a new American car in a Looooooonnnngggg time. hell, I'm still driving my 77 Vette!
And I really didn't mean to insult you, I'm fairly old myself.
