Default 72 Heater control cable adjustment?

Hi all,

So when buying my 72 a while ago, checked that the original A/C blew cold, all was good.

After owning the car for a bit, I constantly got hot air through vents, regardless of selection of A/C and temperature.

Today I pulled the passenger glove box and center console cover.
It appears that the temperature control cable is too long. The mechanical switch on top of the blend valve moves freely when I adjust it by hand, but if I use the temperature control panel it will go to hot, then not have enough range on the temp wheel to get the mechanical switch pulled back to the left(cold).

Should I manually adjust the cable length?
Any tips on how to calibrate that?

Am I missing a built-in adjustment option?

Thanks ik advance from a C3 newby!

Switch all the way to the left

Switch all the way to the right

Tim

Default Outer cable bracket broken?

So after posting previous message,
I noticed that the outer coating of the cable moves, whereas I believe it should be fixed in place with the bracket that you can see broken on the picture.

Does anyone have a picture of how that is supposed to look?

Suggestions for a repair?

Just happen to have my 72 apart. Here are both ends, has some adj on the box end. I would just get a new cable.

Yeah that looks much better than mine.
Is it possible to pull the new cable behind the dash by attaching it to the old one?
Really don't want to remove the whole center dash too

Can't say I do know it snakes around to get past the radio. Hope this helps I know it is a mess but was when I was taking everything apart. Hopefully you can follow the cable!

I have the same issue. The cleanest and easiest solution is to buy a new control cable, but you can produce a new metal clamp to fix the problem. I bought a new one for $29 bucks and this has a metal clamp.

Yeah I have a new cable on order now.
I was able to temporarily fix it, but then had to pull the center dash for something else anyway, so might as well replace it.

New cable is here, it's the kind with the metal clamps. Does this part with the spring and collar have to be transfered to the new cable?

That would mean removing the metal bracket on the new cable...

Fun fact:
The replacement I received is too long for my setup. There's no way I could make that work.
Luckily I could use the new metal brackets that came with that cable on my old one. So everything's in working order again, just weird that the new cable is that much off.

I don't have any side by side pictures, because I used one cable to pull the other behind the dash (which went smoother than expected).

Anyway, onto some air flow checking and thermal insulation, before she's ready for spring!

Hello Timmert

Let's see what comes my way, I ordered the replacement part from Willcox. Do you have a photo of what it looks like repaired on the Heater Control unit page?

I used pliers to get the metal brackets off the new cable, and on the old one (at both ends). Jump clamp them down tight and they'll stay put.

Ideally your new cable is the correct length, but if not I'd change over that bracket like I did. Easy enough
