Default HELP ‘81 Ecklers- sending unit replacement

Hey all,

Looking for advice on a replacement sending unit. Researching replacements, this doesn’t appear to be common on any vette. I googled the part but have had no luck finding anything close.

Would rebuilding this unit be an option? The ohm reading is not stable- thinking the spring might be the issue. Thanks in advance

That's the correct part, yes. But the OP didn't remove that. He has some 5-bolt unit.

OP, can you post a photo of the top of your tank? Perhaps a Bubba adaptor is there that can be removed to get the 8-bolt flange back.

Here’s the top of the tank. This is a tank that’s no longer produced but the manufacturer said that there were popular for eckler conversions

Thanks! Is this a hatchback or shooting brake conversion? Nifty! Did the tank manufacturer say where Eckler's got the sending unit? Depending on how handy you are, you may be able to use the sending unit bits from the 81 assembly (new, or used) as long as the tubing passages are intact. Otherwise, you could modify the tank. Fill it with water several times before you do that, though!

EDIT: There are also stand-alone sending units to tell your gas gauge what it needs, if the rest of the fuel pickup/return bits work. Be sure to get one in the correct Ohm range.

It’s a hatchback. Called ecklers and they don’t know anything about what I’ve got. Called ATL Labs because it’s their fuel cell and they know anything about it. One company referred me to TriStarr radiator out of NY that rebuilds units. All of the lines are in great shape. It’ll need a sock but If anyone has any helpful advice as to how I can rebuild it that would be great.

Update:

I took apart the area of the rheostat. I’m going to try to rebuild this. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement 90 ohm rheostat like this?

I know this may sound a bit odd, but since you have what looks like you already have the tank out that isn't stock. Why not replace the tank and with the correct sending unit for the year? I know it may cost more, but would be worth it in the long run and save you a lot of *** pain trying to find things that are no longer made. Hopefully, your current tank isn't in there because of some other mod on the car. GL with your search and project.

You raise a valid point and I could take the risk of buying a stock tank and sending unit assuming that it would drop right in but I don’t know if the car was so modified that it had to have this tank versus a stock tank. When I talked to ATL Labs, they said that these cells were heavily purchased for eckler conversions for reasons I do not know of

Grab some electrical cleaner (DeoxIT spray contact cleaner0 and give that a try. Might just need a good cleaning to get it back in service.
