Just curious if this is the factory engine for my ‘72.

The cars partial VIN is stamped below the engine number where the paint is peeling off

Thanks. Yea I didn’t notice those set of #s at first. I’ll have to brush them off to see them better. So this set of #s should match the serial number from the Vin?
i can make out the 297 so I’m assuming it’s the engine my car left the factory with.

Do not “brush” off anything on the engine pad with anything abrasive. Use a good paint remover or lacquer thinner to remove the paint. Gently wipe it clean. Your engine pad will have lines on it called broach marks. You do not want to damage the original machined broach marks on your original engine pad.

In the OP's first picture the characters stick out really well against the paint. Almost like they are highlighted in a darker color. Is this typical?

My block stamping is pretty faint.

I'm going to guess that since his pad is painted orange (incorrectly), the oil, grease, and dirt in the characters creates much better contrast than oil, grease, and dirt filled characters against bare cast iron. Also, some stamps are much more heavily debossed than others. Probably just depended upon which guy whacked at the holder and the mood of the day.
