Who are some of the trusted rebuilders of alternators in our hobby today ? Mine was rebuilt around 30 years ago by John Pirkle , it needs service again.?
You can actually do it pretty easily yourself. Back in the days I belonged to the ISCA I was rebuilding my own alternators. I always had people ask me where I got them done and I said I did it myself - some of them started asking if I'd do theirs for a price, and I turned it into a little side business for a while.
You can get bearings and brushes, and other parts, from your local ORiely's, Auto Zone, NAPA, etc. I'd lightly bead blast the case, replace all the wear parts, clean up all the bolts/nuts/etc., use a c-clamp and socket to press the bearings out, have the hardware re-plated if necessary, put it back together, give it a very light coat of clear satin, and they would stay looking great for years. When you're done, I used to take the alternator to my local parts store and they would spin test it for me to make sure it was putting out the correct specs. EZPZ if you like doing that sort of thing. I'm sure there are lots of uTube vids too. Best, Paul
you are smart to keep original.. the china remanufactured are noisy and draw more HP..
if you like original.. the only comment i would have is to brass brush not blast as numbers wear down..
i did not clear mine left bare.. but did paint the stator that shows.. i think its the epoxy they use for insulation..color (check your year)
i did these and starters for a living for a while. i will never waste my time on another delco starter. these alternators are very nice pieces. easy to do. easy to upgrade to 100 amps.
Do you have part numbers for the electric parts , parts made in USA , where can I get them …..eBay is a total mystery everything looks generic and there are no cross reference,
I figure I replace all these while it’s apart.
rectifier
regulator
Diode trio
the rest of it ….bearings , brushes case , stator seems clean , I had it apart myself one of the housing screws failed couple years back and I had to take the alt apart to extract the screw. There are NO alternator shops in my area , only shops that change out the whole thing. maybe 120 mile round trip at best for an old school shop.

What Year,
What Alternator Number,
What Amperage,
What Date Code.
Most NOS Delco parts cover a wide range of Alternator amparge outputs and USA made. Other than the Alternator date code itself The only other date that is visible would be the voltage regulator if that's important.
I bought a remanufactured 10si switched the BB pulley on to it . Now I can operate my daily garage needs, the car stay safe charged , , as I need to move things around daily . I have small garage , little driveway, space is a premium here , I couldn’t afford to have the car sitting dead really even for a day as I need to move stuf in and out of garage . at beach you can’t leave a vintage car out doors long . Car is running good and starts quick , so I can store it inside every night . Parking is very tight , I even use my neighbors driveway ..LOL ….never enough parking or garage space for all the people here.
I will most likely fix the original alternator myself now that I can take my time and I don’t have to deal with inconvenience or issues not running. oh I never had these issues in VA wHere I had acres of land , a huge garage and all that , lots of help , shops everywhere……., it’s different here
