Default Help with trim

Hi everyone. I need some help. Trying to get these to go on, does anyone have any ideas that would work? Where we try to push the molding on the clip just pushes off the fender.

The clip should have a little dimple on it.... the protrudes to the inside of the clip. That dimple is supposed to snap into a tiny hole that should be on the underside of the fender..... that holds the clip in place. I also had to hold the clip with a screwdriver or paint stick, etc. to help keep it seated in the hole while snapping the trim piece onto the clip. I hope I made that clear enough to understand?

My 72 has two clips on each side. Their placement dictates the position of the trim.
