In the process of putting in a C4 blower fan. Well got the original out anyway, replacement C4 fan and cooling tube still on a slow boat. But I'm told it's rowing this way.
So first question, any good reason to keep this capacitor?
pouring over every bit of information in every G.M. publication I have. All that's ever mentioned is its for radio noise suppression. Nothing more. Although I am fairly certain I have read elsewhere that it is specifically for A.M. Radio noise suppression. And I can't remember the last time I turned on a A.M. station. So , electrical experts out there, Should I just lose this?
Second question, for those of you out there who have done this C4 fan upgrade, Any real cool ideas on the spacer needed? cutting one out of wood I guess works. but perhaps there are some better ideas. And I don't own a jig saw.
I never had the capacitor in the first place and didn’t add it when I did the C4 fan upgrade. Both my AM and FM bands work fine. But, I have noise suppression at the radio itself (on the power lead) so maybe that’s the reason. If you find you have objectionable noise after the fact it’s not a hard upgrade.
I used wood for my spacer. Worked great, and after painting it flat black you can’t see it at all when mounted. Unless the thought of a wooden component triggers your OCD, it’s the cheapest and easiest solution IMO. I have read other materials being used on the forum, but I didn’t want to fool around with sourcing and figuring out how to work with it when I already had the wood.
You will probably want to borrow a jigsaw no matter what you choose. Cutting that center hole will be a pain without it.
Put a couple coars of marine grade clear varnish on the wood after it is cut to size, drilled, and sanded. Then spray with satin black as members advised
That same 913 Capacitor was used from 64-80 with that style of connector on Many GM models...
A good used one is selling on e-bay for about $20.00 USD.
As far as the spacer, I think you have a early 77?
There were 2 different fan motors used, and on some early GM models with A/C a spacer between motor and housing was included with a replacement motor.
I know you have said you don't click on links but this is a E-bay listing for the Early motor showing spacer...

Maybe a wood spacer would work but you would need the tools to fab one...
Someone on this forum cut his out of a plastic cutting board. If you have a plastic shop in the area they could fab one for you; same for a local wood shop.
I spent some time tonight looking threw everything at Bunnings. Looking for a fan spacer hidden inside a common product. I have a plan. However, let's see if it works before I post it up.
So I bought this at Bunnings, (just like Home Depo, just Australian version).
Can you see the blower motor spacer in there? Well I can.
No jig saw required. I did however use my die grinder with an aluminum burr. Cuts away plastic very cleanly.
And came up with this.
Note the white nylon pins laying upper left. Harley Davidson clutch cable pins with a hole drilled threw them. Have tons of them. perfect length. For standoff spacers. Ready to go in.
Looks like you used some sort of catch basin grate...
One thing I would also do when your wiring it up,
Run a new #12 dedicated Ground wire from bell housing bolt near starter to the blower motor.
If the wiring now is original, the existing ground wire is only a #16 and also feed the Hi Speed Blower Relay.
That would match the #12 ppl wire size now powering the motor.
Yup, I'm all over the wiring thing. I overkill all my wiring. Never hurts to go thicker on your wires!
Haven't got it wired up yet. That's next and I am going to do some rewiring of the air-con in the same location while I'm in there.
Got this far today.
She's mounted in place. did a quick test. yup it runs.
l'll get it all wired up properly in the next day or 2.
So, just a follow up on this. I know, a bit late.
Anyway.
Wow! what a difference!
My C4 fan blows way harder than my original C3 fan.
I've read a lot of opinions on this that ranged from "Not worth the effort" to , " this blows at least 50 percent better".
Well, I'm in the this blows at least 50 percent better group.
And WELL worth the effort.
Air Con compressor actually cycles less as fan is moving air over evaporator core and is actually moving the cold out into the passenger compartment.
Huge improvement overall and highly recommend doing this mod to your C3.
I bought the C4 fan to put in my 69 with AC. Has anyone done this? I am curious if there is room between the fan housing and coolant expansion tank to fit. The 3/4" spacer may move the motor too far.
What is the difference between the two fans, is it the motor or the fan design?
The difference is the width of the fan. Because it’s wider it goes deeper into the hvac box, hence the need for the spacer to keep the edge of the fan from scraping the box.
Can’t answer your question for space near the expansion tank in 69, mines a 77. Plenty of room for it that year.
This is my spacer I used Black plastic. You need to make sure that the spacer sits flat I needed to cut reliefs where the rivets are so it would sit flat.
Can't comment on fit in the earlier car as mine is a 77 as well.
The difference is mainly in the fan. it's not only deeper but also has a different pitch to the blades.
I just know it works!
