Default [Barn Find] 1975 Coupe

A good friend told me recently of a 1975 Coupe that is going to be available and if I am interested… of course! Was my reply.

Here is what I was told:
1975 Coupe
Silver on Silver
4 speed manual
T-Tops
Low-Mileage
pristine condition
has been parked in a home basement for 8 years
was started 3-4 years ago.

That’s all the info my friend currently has other than the Father was the second owner and has passed away, so the son has sent off to NC DMV for the title name change, 2 weeks ago.

The son needs money.

I’ve been granted first right of refusal.

I should be viewing the car within the next couple of weeks.

My friend knew the Owner and obviously knows the son. He also knows me well, knows I own a couple Vettes and have a C8 on pre-order. He also knows I will do a fair assessment of the car, and make a fair and reasonable offer.

Someone had offered $3500 for it and the son said No…. Again, Nobody else is in line for it after me, currently.

So, with all of this said, and assuming the car is indeed pristine with around 50k miles…..

what does CFOT say a fair offer would be?

(I know about it being all smogged up and only 165 HP)

TIA

Hey Ceptor,
Very difficult putting a number on someone else's stuff and cars that sit for years in museums get an aura that they're somehow worth more when all they really are is neglected.
If he turned down $3,500 offer him $5K and see what he says. If it has not been started in 4 years, I can PROMISE you it will not be "pristine". It may be clean, and have low miles but rest assured it's going to need complete brakes, a $1,000 set of tires, fluids, belts, hoses, etc. minimum. If it has A/C that can eat up another $1,000-$1,500 to re-do. Sounds like a great car in a nice color combination and I like '75's. But sitting for the better part of a decade is not the best thing for any car. Don't overpay for a long term storage car. If you can buy it at a fair price and expect to spend a few thousand dollars to bring it up to every day driver status, that would be good for everyone.
Cheers, Greg

Thanks Greg, you make some good points,
I had thought about the probable a/c issue and new tire costs.

it appears that he doesn’t have the $’s to get the car checked out minimally to be road worthy, so yes, that would be a factor in a fair offer.

I’ll give updates to this tread.

virtually all 50 year old cars that are still in existence sat for a long time at least once. and if they didn't sit, their tires, belts, etc still would have aged at the same rate or faster while the moving parts also wore out. if you park it in the yard and let grass grow under it while a decade of rain falls on-in it is one thing. keeping it in a garage for a decade is about as good as you can treat a car over that decade. this car could be one of the few 75 coupes worth 20k. when right, not as it sits. but it may be worth 10 as it sits. doesn't mean you have to pay that much. much as the son needs money, he also wants his dad's car cared for and treated right. so you need a bedside manner when you deal with him.

I hope it works out for you...have $5,000 extra in your wallet for those 50 years of aging

Hmmmm?
I don't know derek, but I think $10K for a non-running '75 sounds very generous when you can buy a running driving car from this era, here in Southern California for only $7,500.

For what it's worth this is what Hagerty thinks on a '75 Coupe....L48.
#3 good condition $12,900.
#4 fair $7,200.
If it happened to be garage stored most of it's life.....nice underneath....a $5k offer could be a deal...

i was happy to get 7 for my very clean 75 4 or 5 years ago. but prices are climbing and i am assuming people are not throwing around the term pristine like it is a #3 or 4 car. i am not saying it is worth 10. saying if it is that nice, it could well be.

My 78 383 Stroker is pristine. It’s name is Cherry Bomb and was advertised here. It is a true treasure….

I am excited about this one, and hope it all plays out to be a good car, and everyone is happy.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments!

Stay Tuned!

Condider:
Tires are $x each
Complete fluid changes are $
Gas tank drain (not a lot of $ just a PITA job).

All will most likely be required in a "pristine" car, thats been sitting for years.

belts and every piece of rubber fluid passes throuh. T-top seals included... but the less than pristine cars need all the same stuff. every 10 years,

yes the ‘just get her running’ costs add up quick. I bought my 79 for 9k. It was redon in the 90s. Motor with about 20k on it, car with 57. Tires, battery, bulbs, plugs/wires/cap/rotor, 2 front brake calipers, new fluids everywhere all had to be done fairly quick.

Then I blew up a u joint and sheared a spindle trying to clutch kick it around a corner so she got a whole new rear suspension and drive train 7 months later.

Still worth every penny.
