I want to reinstall the posi unit in the diff. case but I have no idea how to begin with these side shims...
Where do I start? One thick shim on each side?
This is the last thing I have to do so I can put everything back under the rear end (The sun is shining and it's getting warmer... Time to drive!).
Also there are these special shims included in the kit (see pic).
I've seen mention of those shims in this thread: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...iff-build.html
You may find your answer there. Sorry I can't tell you the answer, I don't remember what it said. I haven' gotten to that point in my reassembly yet.
Have you tried the original one piece shims first, or as a starting point? The adjust from there? If you need to adjust you need more than those shims t make up space..
In one of your previous posts, you addressed getting a good pattern on your gears. I hope you have the measurements from those shims so all you need to do is build up the supershims to equal those measurements, plus add 0.005” for bearing preload.
If you didn’t measure the thickness of your shimstacks before, you’ll need to repeat the process of checking the pattern with the new shims. Once you are satisfied with your pattern, increase each shimstack by 0.005”.
This is what I do and if Gary responds, defer to his procedure over mine. Do you have any idea on how thick the shim packs were originally? I install the carrier without the ring gear and shim until I get zero endplay. Record the shim thickness on the left and right. Record total thickness. Install the ring gear and carrier and shim packs and take a pattern or if excessive/no endplay adjust the shim packs accordingly. Add/subtract equal amount of shim thickness equally from the left and right shim packs while maintaining the total thickness previously noted- if you add 0,015" to the left shim pack, deduct 0.015" from the right shim pack. Keep doing this until you achieve the correct pattern and backlash, then add 0.005" to each shim pack for bearing preload.

I have measured it all up, before I took it apart. Phew...
Is the way the super shims are placed in the differential the proper way (as seen in the picture: beveled side facing inside the differential).
