Default 1968 replacement ignition key, Briggs and Stratton?

With the purchase of my ‘68 Vette I received one single badly worn Curtis key.

Not comfortable with a single worn key I made 2 copies that do work in the ignition and doors. This way I’m relatively sure I won’t snap a key off in the lock. Btw, I did lubricate the locks.
I ordered a new lock cylinder and keys from Zip which came today.
The keys are the octagonal shape and there is “GM” on one side but on the other, and here’s the odd part, it reads “Briggs and Stratton Corporation” with the B&S shield (?).
Is this how they were or is that just whose making the key blank today ?

Octagonal are correct for 68.They look like correct reproductions ( i am only assuming repro due to coming from ZIP). I think original blanks are around as well, and yes, the keys were Briggs.

My father-in-law was a locksmith. He passed away a few months ago, so now we have a lot of his stuff to dispose of..... including about a million key blanks.
So I can verify that Briggs & Stratton made a LOT of key blanks for a LOT of vehicles!.

First, sorry for your loss.
Worked on a lot of different makes over the years and this is my first Vette. Thought I knew a lot but this car has opened a lot new stuff for me.
Cool info, thanks.

Many oddities on the 68 as you will find out. 69 keys are "normal" square as they fit the column mounted ignition setup. Have fun with your car. 68 owner here since 1985.

Briggs & Stratton has been the supplier of keys and locks to GM since the very beginning. It was originally called Basco . Until 1949 they were the only supplier to GM. When they had a lengthy strike, GM obtained a license to have Rochester Products also make keys. These have "RP" on one side. The B & S logo was on the key until 1969 when the overall design changed.

I have been seeing a lot of one off stuff with the ‘68 and I find it interesting.
Briggs making the keys is part of GM history I wasn’t aware of.
We had a ‘52 Buick when I was a kid but can’t remember if it’s key was made by them. We used to be able to turn the ignition and run it without a key. I remember it was “acc-off-run” you’d put your foot on the accelerator to the floor to engage the starter. I miss that car.
