Default 1971 backup light help

new c-3 owner, backup lights do not work when put in reverse 4-speed car. all wiring at lights are good, looked under at the trans, switch is good but no harness or plug. where does this harness come from. I did find a plug in the
drivers side engine compartment but have no idea what it is for.

So the plug you're showing (tan/Lt Blue) should be for your TCS Solenoid if it hasn't been removed by a previous owner.
The backup light switch wires should be Pink/LtGreen. These wires come out of the interior dash harness and exit the fire wall into the engine compartment just above the pedals.
The wires are just long enough to connect to the wire set coming up from the transmission switch.

How did you determine the switch is good? There is an adjustment of the switch and it is sensitive. Loosen the two screws and twist the switch with the shifter in reverse.

If you take some time and read posts on the forum, the switch located on the tranny must be adjusted with the ignition turned on. Loosen the two screws on the switch so that the backup lights illuminate when shifter is in reverse. If you adjust to far, the lights will stay on all the time (when ignition is on). I used a volt meter set on continuity (with buzzer) connected to the switch, the car was on jacks to adjust the switch.
