I bought a pair of replacement speakers for my '72. The driver's side quit working a few years ago. I did the pass.side first, and now have to move to the driver's side. Question #1: Do I have to drop the steering column? #2: Can the tach and speedo cluster be brought out and down just enough to replace the speaker? I ask these because many years ago (when I was young) I had to replace the tach cable and I remember it being a b*tch of a job. Thanks.

I replaced both speakers on my 72 convertible. Remove the passenger map panel ( I remove the plastic kick panel first) and you will see the bracket that holds the dash pad, remove the screw. The Top three screws from the drivers speedo / tach panel need to be removed. Next remove the screws holding the center gauge cluster. You only need to get the dash pad out, so you may let all the wires remain attached to the center gauge cluster. If you have a OEM Dash Pad, use a heating pad (placed in the center) to make it pliable so that it can be removed. Once the dash pad is removed, the old speaker and it’s bracket can be removed. I never had to remove the drivers side panel, until the speedo and tach died. Removing and then reinstalling the drivers side panel was a nightmare, the 50 year old wiring harness is like a steel cable, worst job that I have done on my car.
I replaced both speakers on my 73 a number of years ago. Yes, I dropped the steering column a few inches and also pulled forward (out and down) the tach and speedo guages. I had to disconnect the cables from both to do so. When done, I pushed the tach and speedo back in place, then reahed up from underneath to re-attach the cables. Take out the seat and remove the T-tops so youn can lie on the floor and do the job.
I replace my speakers in my '72 also. All I did was remove the dash pad. However, in order to do that, I had to remove the pillar post trim to get more room for the pad to come out. PS, I recommend disconnecting the battery during this process...
