I bought a replacement speedometer cable a while back, having issues with it.
I noted when I bent the housing, the cable in the core pulled back into the housing as if the housing was growing longer as it bent.
As if the housing were a big spring which may grow in length as it is bent...
Sounds like a poorly made product, other speedo cables I have laying around don't do this...
I'll probably be cleaning up one of the used ones I have laying around, toss this one in the trash.
I bought a GM service replacement speedo cable, for my 1970, which ended up being longer. I ended up using a speedometer shop to shorten the cable.
How long ago did you get this GM replacement speedometer cable? Where did you find it?
The reproduction cable housing seems to change length slightly when bent, causing the shaft to pull inward, disengaging from the transmission end. Two other units I have do not do this. Seems to be another piece of junk reproduction.
I bought it from Dr Rebuild, it was at least five years ago. You know you could or could have a new cable installed in your old housing.
Thanks for your response. The cable is fine in the two units I had replaced thinking they were the reason my speedometer was bouncing. The recent replacement appears to have other issues.
Plan now is to clean and lightly lube the unit I recently removed. Pretty sure it was a Delco unit bought from Doctor Rebuild many years ago. The length of cable exposed at each end doesn’t change as the cable is bent, unlike the recent replacement.
If the flutter persists I’d guess it’s a problem with the speedometer or transmission?
Generally the most common cause of speedo bounce is a sticky cable. I purchased a cable from one of the suppliers, oh, about 20 years ago. I also found it to be junk. Cleaned out my original housing by blowing brake cleaner and compressed air through it. Got it good and clean. Used the inner cable from the replacement lubing with Graphite as I installed it.
About a year ago when I was up in Cairns it started doing the bounce again only after a long drive. Pain in the butt. But removed the inner wire from the housing, basically just wiped it off. relubed and its been fine. And yes I've been on a few very long drives in the last year.

I got tired of the new housings and weak cables always breaking. I went to electric tach and GPS speedo. Im just done with the shitty chinese repops. Eventually we wont be able to fix anything on these cars for very long. The cables are garbage, Electrical switches are garbage, all the vacuum components suck...LOl and try and buy a good fuel pump that is similar to stock...the carters are garbage

It is this one...works about as well as any GPS sensor. Converts it from gps electrical to mechanical. Therre may be others that do the same from the tranny to electrical.
I was asking if he used this when he hooked his speedo up 9 out of 10 times if you don’t use the adapter the cable will stretch but I do understand the new ones are cheesy and sometimes longer
