Default 79 tire options

60s Tires
i have a 79 L82 that year they came with 2 options :
Option 1- 225/70/R15 GY radial
Option 2 - 255/60/R15 Goodyear GT Radial
if you ordered the second option the manufacturer would modify the front fender well . But say now you want to go with 60s and DO NOT want to modify the fender well.
can you put the 255/60/R15s in the rear and
say 245//60/R15s in the front without it rubbing ?

Possibly, or you could go with the 225/70R15 on the front and the 255/60R15 in back.

Actually, I thought in the years that got the optional 255/60R15 tires, all of the (factory installed) front fenders cleared that size. I don't think they had separate parts on the lane, I thought they changed the molds for the fenders to make them all clear.

I ordered my 78' S/A with the p225's strictly so the frt fnd wells were not cut. 2 wks later drove to GY dealer, swapped out for p255's,never had a rubbing issue in the frt, some times on hard turn-in over a sm curb the backs would scrub a tad, hardly leaving a mark. DO IT,looks better and handles like a dream! Hdal

My 79' did not come with the larger tire but when I purchased new tires in he 255s, (all around), I bought the Coopers. There is no rubbing at all.

I thought that was the that all 78-79 C3s had the modification from the factory (And 80-82 was redesigned to not need it).

Here's what the "cut" looks like on my 79, behind the front wheels. The tire still rubs on the frame by the steering box on tight left turns, but not on the fenders. I'd be very surprised if the OP's car does not have this feature.

Thanks for checking! Perhaps not all cars were trimmed after all.

In my 79 the lip on top of the guards have been trimmed at the factory, I run 255/60R15s within only minor rubbing on chassis when on full lock.

Does anyone have the NCRS 1978-1979 Corvette Technical Manual & Judging Guide? Is there anything in there about this question?

I'm not saying anything about any particular example, but a single car fromone of these two years with untrimmed fenders could be a repair using untrimmed parts, and could have had the trimmed ones from the factory. Even if it's the original owner, and they "know" the fenders weren't replaced, that doesn't mean there wasn't damage in shipping that was repaired by the dealership before the car was sold. I really don't consider a single example as "authoritative proof" that the factory installed untrimmed fenders on all 1978-1979 cars with the 225/70R15 tires.

I thought that the "trimming" was done at the front of the wheel opening............

That's the photo I had. I'll take another look. Perhaps a PO or a tire did that to my car.

Says both were trimmed..inside rear..and front lip…
i have zero trimming…and i do not know history from factory…butstill have grease markings..
it says the use of the larger tires in 78-79 required trimming.
hmmlooks like i need some new seals on frame rails..looks like tough find for those
fronts

I have a 77. when I purchased it second hand back in 89. It had BFG 255/60-15's on it. I have been running Cooper's for many, many years now. 255/60-15's. Never an issue of any kind. And I am certain my car was never trimmed.

Look in your parts and illustration catalog Gr.7.883 73-79 Seal, FRT BPR Brace
Zip has them for about $10.00...
Problem is they were stapled in...
I have made staples using stainless wire on another projects.
Just a thought...plastic rivets that were used to attach A-Arm dust shields?/?
