I have an '80 Corvette with shifter issues.... it looks like the shifter control rod isn't completely engaging with the gear bracket. The tab (for lack of a better term) doesn't come up completely to push against the gear gate - I tried cleaning it out, but it still doesn't work completely properly - I have seen shifter rebuild kits but don't really want to rebuild the entire thing. Any ideas?

If it's even remotely like the earlier ones then there are two springs, one down inside the shaft near the bottom but another one up under the thumb button, if that one is missing the rod only comes part way up using the lower spring
