Default Interior door handle install

I'm working on installing new door panels, having issues with installing the interior door handle.
I don't follow the bit where some say to put a flat blade screw driver behind the mechanism.
Does the door handle get installed AFTER the door panel is mounted?
If so, I cannot slide the door handle on without somehow getting the release mechanism to swing out.
I can put a screw driver in the slot but can't slide the handle on with the screw driver in the way.
Instructions say to put a screw driver behind the mechanism, how?

It's been a long time since I last dealt with this, may have installed the handle first, then slid the door panel over it...

This, once tipped out a bit, second screwdriver behind the mechanism.

AS 4-vettes pix shows, I did a similar process. Push in on the back side of
the mechanism with the screw driver to pivot it outwards and slide the U channel of the handle over
the mechanism.

Aren’t there supports be “Ridges” on the pot metal lock control sticking out of the door panel? I use a very large flat blade screw driver to open the pot metal Part, then I insert a large plastic trim tool to hold the pot metal part ope. Then slide on the hand land remove the plastic trim tool.

The pot metal door lock control mechanism is 4001 or 4002. See the ridges where the handle slides on?

Thanks, this makes sense, I'll give it a try.

Thanks, another solution I hadn't heard of.

Default 68 door panel installation

I left the door handle on, tied a piece of wire to the handle so I could open it. Fed the wire through the panel opening, then positioned the panel in place by simply pulling on the wire attached to the handle, thus giving the needed clearance. This avoids having to install the handle after the door panel is on.

Door handle does NOT need to be removed to install or to remove the door panel. If you are repairing the door handle, it would be best done with the door panel OFF. Once fixed and you are ready to install the door panel, position the panel so that the upper edge is just above the top of the door and the opening for the door handle is just in front of the leading edge of the handle. Reach behind with your free hand and pull the handle outward (like you are releasing the door) and slip the leading edge thru the opening for it. Then pull your free hand out, and slide the panel rearward to position it as you need to install it. Done this MANY, MANY times with no problem.
