Default Air vents question

Just bought a 79. The a/c isn’t currently working. And I noticed the fan controls work on all speeds but the vent doors seem stuck on the feet only vents. Nothing comes out of the dash or window defog vents. I’ve read the vent doors work off the vacuum system so I thought maybe there was a vacuum leak. But I had that checked about while it was at my mechanic and there were no vacuum leaks detected. Any thoughts? Thx

Heater flows thru foot and defroster vents only; more below on htr; more above on def. All the middle vents flow on ac or vent. Get the 1979 factory manual, it’ll be your best friend. reasonable prices on fleabay.

It’s so good I use it for my 78. The only significant difference I’ve found is a different fuse box.

Thanks. I got a book or two with the vehicle I haven’t checked out yet so I’ll see if I have that. I don’t get any air through the dash vents no matter what setting it’s on. I’ve tried all settings combinations

As I recall, There's a vacuum actuator under the dash that switches from defrost to heat.
This one (it's my 79')

I see, it’s behind the instrument cluster. How easy is that to remove

If you want to take a drive up to southern NH I can help you (tools and clean shop space). I've gone through the entire vacuum system and also the AC system on my 78 so I can help with figuring out what isn't working on your 79. My car is stock also and its blowing 40 degree air out the vents and all HVAC controls and doors work as they should.

You will need to learn how the vacuum system works and how to test each component. You don't need to pull the center cluster just yet because you don't know if the diverter pot is even getting vacuum let alone if the vacuum is getting to the HVAC selector. Once it is known that vacuum is getting to the right places each vacuum actuator can be checked for proper operation. There is a lot of vacuum pump and gauge work to be done in your future. You are doing the right thing in checking and getting the vacuum system for the HVAC controls working before touching the A/C system. After the controls work you can get into the A/C system to check all of the components and then check for leaks.
