There’s one sure fire way to make the list shorter. Take the body off the frame and fix everything on the frame! Then several thousand dollars later, you have a new car underneath. Simple!
I'm not thinking that's making the list shorter......
Depends on how you look at things. While you are fixing problem after problem, year after year, I will essentially be driving a mechanically new car for quite a long time. What do your #4 body mounts look like?
I've done a fair few major rebuilds. Don't kid yourself.
The quality of a number of replacement parts just isn't what it should be. And there are always bugs to work out.
No matter what you do, it's still a 45- 50 year old car.
You can do a complete rebuild / restoration of an old C3 Corvette.....like I did with the 77, and am doing with the 69......OR, you can fix stuff one failure / one roadside tow / one garage for years event.......either way, the old stuff is going to fail. People who pretend they can buy a 40 plus year old car, unrestored and most likely poorly maintained, and think they can drive it regularly without problems are dreaming. Not possible.
Let’s be honest. Half of the fun of these cars is keeping them on the road. It’s a common response for me. People say, “Oh that’s awesome! I’d love to have an old Corvette”. Would you really? Do you have any idea what it takes to keep one running? Easier said than done. People don’t realize the work it takes to keep them on the road. I was being a smart ***. Of course I don’t expect to never have any problems again. But it has been an absolute pleasure doing a body off on my car (and necessary given how badly rusted my original frame was). And I’m very happy with the results. Unfortunately, I am almost finished. Just have to do the bumpers, interior and some wiring, then it’ll be ready to start. I’m already going to miss working on it now that it’s almost done! But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I take pride in the fact that I did the work myself, as I’m sure we all do. Nobody works on my car except me. So ignore my smart *** response, and keep these beauties running!
All good mate, I do all my own work except for paint.
I can hone a cylinder, cut valve seats, rebuild most anything mechanical, But paint work is not for me.
And dont worry. Once you start driving it. It will still need tinkering. They always do.
