Interesting Trim Tag
New to the forum, not new to Corvettes. I have a buddy with a 1969 Corvette Convertible. Some interesting issues with the trim tag and the VIN.
See attachment of trim tab. Looking to figure our paint and interior colors. This one has us stumped.
Also the VIN show the last six numbers as 400560, the rest of the VIN is consistant with the normal VIN's Just have never seen a 400000 VIN.It is an early 68 build, Build date shows Sept of 67.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
.
Cheers,
Kyle
Is it a 68 or a 69, you refer to it as both? If it's a 68, then 400560 is correct, the control number in 68 was a "4". Every year that number changed, 69 was a "7", 70 was a "4" again, 71 was a "1", and so on.
As far as the trim tag "436" is 1968 Tobacco leather, but the paint code is a question mark. 68 color codes all started with a "9", and special order colors were usually designated as "SPEC" or "PRIMER ". Do you have any idea what the car's original color was? It could also be a mistake on the trim tag. Though it didn't happen often, it is known that occasionally a trim tag did sneak out of St Louis with a mistake on it.
By the way, according to the C3 Birthday Calculator, 1968 Corvette VIN was built on September 19, 1967, which fit's nicely with the trim tag body build date of September 18 (B18).

That is a very interesting trim tag and car.
Big block, Tripower convertible, pretty desirable Corvette there.
Looks like Tobacco interior was not offered with British Green, although the car may now be painted that color.
I think it's a special order combination, and with that highly desirable, optional power train, this would be exactly the car that could have been a special order. Not too many base engine, automatic cars ordered with special trim/paint codes. Best way to tell is to remove the door sill and pull the carpet back to see what the furthest down color is. It is also possible it was delivered in primer and painted by the delivering dealer or customer's body shop. In that case, primer would be the paint you see under the carpet.
I am super intrigued by a car this desirable in the first place, and then add the possibilty of a special order paint? Could put this particular car in a price category all by itself.
Any chance of a tank sticker?
Cheers, Greg
