Default Panel behind seats

I am looking for a screw for a panel that I have no idea what it is for. The panel is mounted behind the seats on the roof of the cargo area. Two screws are in the back where it hinges. The front of the panel (right behind the seats) has a clip to hold it up. Can someone tell me what the function of this panel is and where I might find the correct screws for the back. I have one screw and it has a plastic guide I guess you'd call it, on it.

Thanks!

This is like a riddle. I’m guessing the tray for the rear window storage, but you really need to tell us what year. And maybe a photo? Nothing to be afraid of, just let us help you.

I thought I was clicking on a C3 thread but regardless, you guys are absolutely right, don't leave out any detail.

It's a 69 Vette coupe, and if you lean both seats forward you see the cargo area behind them. In that cargo area on the roof is a metal tray. Way in the back on the roof part is the hings for the metal tray with a screw on either side that allows it to tilt down only in the front.. Just under the window is a clip that holds it up. The clip is easy to pull forward to release the metal tray? Hopefully the attached pictures tell a better story. Thanks for your assistance.

Your tray is metal? I thought they were all either plastic or fiber-board.

The tray is for storing the rear window when you take it out. The screw, should be one on each side allows the front of the tray to be lowered as you said for the window to be placed on the tray. Not sure where you might get the "correct" screw. That one may even be correct. I simply have two screws that allow the tray to be lowered.

Be careful with the rear window tray, its made of fiberboard. Hopefully someone with a 1969 will answer you. I have a 1970 and the screw in your picture is a shoulder bolt for 1970 with a nut welded to the bracket. If you don’t already have a Assembly Instruction Manual, I suggest you purchase one.

It looks like the usual pressed fiberboard. Maybe he just meant the metal trim.

IIRC, 68's had a spring-loaded hinge mechanism and maybe early 69's, later was just the simple screw hinge. The plastic is probably a little bushing for the hinge. I'd probably just find a screw/washer/bolt/nut combo that fits and be done with it. But it looks like a good opportunity to pull it out and clean it up.

I think there were 4 different trays over the 5 years they used them
For the 68-69 they are pressed Fibreboard with 9 slots
68 has a metal strip that is either unpainted or painted gloss black. I've read that the 68 was wider but don't know for sure
69 had the strip highly polished. Might have run into very very early 70
70 - mid march of 71 they were fiberglass with a X molded into them, spring handle at the front to release them The front had the spot molded in for the push button release but they stayed with the pull handle for whatever reason
mid-Late 71 - 72, same fiberglass tray but now had a push button to release them instead of the spring handle
M

And for some reason I believe that nylon washer/screw was the same on that they used for the wiper door linkage mechanism

Mooser, I found out the hard way that the fiberglass trays are shorter from front to back. GM moved the back wall towards the front of the car and so came out with the shorter fiberglass tray. The fiberglass tray is a beautiful piece compared to the fiber board ones.
GM moved the back wall to help protect the occupants from the gas tank catching on fire in a rear end collision. Lou.

Good to know, I am swapping a pop out window in my '74, and a fiber tray may not have fit.

Yes the 68-69 fibreboard ones are a good 4-6" longer, front to back than the later fiberglass ones but I read somewhere that the 68 was wider (side to side) than the 69, that's the one I don't really understand.

And they tended to warp and I guess that's part of the reason gm went to the fiberglass ones.
Still, 4 designs in 5 years....wasn't one of their greater design success stories

This is absolutely true. The plastic bushing is the same part for the wiper door and the window storage tray.

You guys are right, it is a fiberboard. I have owned the car for since 1991 and it's spent most of it's life in a garage. Now that I am an empty nester, I can give it the attention it deserves.
For the screw, I've checked the local auto and hardware stores. The screw itself isn't the difficult piece, its the bushing that I can't find. Maybe a little black tape on a screw will work.

Thanks for all the great advice!

The Corvette parts suppliers should have that plastic bushing available. As they said, it is the same as the ones used on the wiper door mechanisms. Lou.

The only Corvette house I tried was Corvette Central and they said that they had no idea where to get the screw or bushing. I've bought a lot of parts from them over the years so took that as what to expect from all Corvette parts suppliers. Now knowing the wiper door uses the same bushing gives me hope when I call other suppliers. Thanks for that tip!

Probable a different screw but the wiper door bushings should be the same

Yes, it's a different bolt than the shouldered wiper door bolt. The '72 assembly manual specifies bolt #3855554 for the tray hinge; this bolt is also used for the vacuum tank mount. Paragon sells a pair for $5 and the bushings for $1.50 ea.
