Engine code?
Hello all,
I know the engine in my 75 L48 convertible is not matching numbers.
Stamped on the engine pad is "V1029CHB". It has finned aluminum valve covers, but who knows when they were added. Cast iron intake. It has considerably more power than my
75 L48 coupe.
Does anyone know anything about that stamping? I searched the web, but couldn't find anything.

CHB was used on a few different engines and car lines. your need the casting number to narrow it down.

OP asks for help then responds to a request for a picture as if it’s an unreasonable ask, too much trouble? I may be misreading the response but at this point, if I happened to have his original engine sitting in my garage I wouldn’t tell him.

I also KNOW it's not a numbers matching car. I was to see if anyone knew what the V1029 meant. Perhaps generic warranty engine, perhaps something different. I guess the mystery will remain ...

V is Flint 1029 is Oct 29th. to what year we wont know until you tell us the casting date and casting number. ALL engines after 1968 got a vin stamp. having a three-alpha code for a suffix code tells us it was made after 68. CHB was used in a few different car lines in different cubic inch engines. having a suffix code tells us it was installed in a car on an assembly line or sold over the counter for a said car

V is Flint 1029 is Oct 29th. to what year we wont know until you tell us the casting date and casting number. ALL engines after 1968 got a vin stamp. having a three-alpha code for a suffix code tells us it was made after 68. CHB was used in a few different car lines in different cubic inch engines. having a suffix code tells us it was installed in a car on an assembly line or sold over the counter for a said car

the vin number is frequently not stamped as deep as the engine identifier. it could be full of paint. we can give you a better answer with more input. CHB is an 88 firebird 305, a 73 307 or a 75 corvette L48. if the 305 it has a small square stamp pad and most likely no manual fuel pump. V means flint michigan where all c3 small blocks were built. so odds are it is a correct orig 75 L48. odds of somebody finding a correct 75 L48 to install in a 75 L48 vette that needs an engine are not that good. why are you so sure it is not the original engine? what is date stamp on the trim tag on left A-pillar? i bet early november. just cuz it has ***** doesn't mean it can't be the original engine. and since it is most likely a 75 L48 anyway proves the point. it could also have been rebuilt and decked and VIN machined off but RPO and build date survived.

I understand that I have to provide proper information to get a knowledgeable answer, but I do trust my lyin' eyes. I provided the ONLY information that is stamped on the pad.

For clarity this is not true. Truck engines didn't get VIN stamps until later

There are other things that can be seen on the engine stamp pad besides just the numbers that can help identify an engine. Pad shape, location, surface texture and even the size and font of the numbers are some that come to mind.
