Default Tires

Whats everyone running for tires ?
I have been on Good Year Eagle GT255 60R15 all around. I need to get new (not because i have burned them off but because they are old (installed new ~2005) and although they look new - prob not safe). Tires and car garaged for 30 years.
Does anyone run 245 or 235 on the front and 255 on rears ?

Thinking of going with Goodrich. Also i have the stock aluminum wheels, anyone know of nicer wheels that doesn't bust my bank account ?
Cheers.

I run 255-60-15s on all 4 corners.

I used to run BFGs until their pricing went nuts, and they forgot how to make white lettering that doesn't turn brown. Now I usually run Cooper Cobras or Mickey Thompsons.

I run 255-60r15 on all four, I use Mickey Thompson ET Street S/S
in my opinion, they are an excellent tire, huge improvement over the coopers I had on it before.

I run 235/60R15s on my 68. V-rated 15's from performance tire. You can get v-rated 235 or 245 or 255 /60R15 tires from performance plus tire (Long Beach CA) ...I've had them for about 5 years on the front and about 4 on rear. I ended up getting the 235s for my 68 but here are the 245s.... you look around the website for 255s

Default 77 tires

Restoring my 77. It currently has 235 60 15 all the around. Would you recommend going with something different?

If you like the GY Eagle GT tires, go buy another set, they are available...BUT get your wallet out and dig deep. They are not cheap.

If the black book is correct GR70x15 was stock

GR70X15 equals WHAT? - AutoPedia® Bulletin Board System

The equivalent size to the GR70-15 would be P225/70R15 - almost identical in O.D. but slightly wider O.W. than the 'G'(0.3"). The best match in 60 series would be the P265/60R15 - approx. 0.1" taller in O.D., but about 1.7" wider. You may want to check your wheels, though, the minimum width for the P265 is 7.5". The minimum for the P225 is 6.0".

Not sure if the 265 /60 size will fit without rubbing.

Other charts show a 235 or 245 / 60 as the equal. Which makes more sense to me.

Cooper Cobra 255/60/15 fronts, 275/60/15 rear. It will be 27 inch tall stock hieght front one inch taller rears. They stick well and perform up to 110 really well. Havent gone above that that I know of.officer..not looking at the speedo until I slow down

I wouldn't use anything shorter than 235R60 or you will have a big(bigger) wheelwell gap.

Use stock size and go with the Cooper Cobra's.

I promise you'll be glad you went this way

I tried 255/60/15 rear with 235/60/15 front with stock aluminum wheels; Cooper Cobras. Thought it would help with handling being too darty when crossing highway ruts; along with increasing toe-in just a little to 1/4” total front, 1/16” rear. Only helped a little. 235’s are 26” diameter vs 27” for 255, so lowers the car 1/2”. 235’s also don’t fill the wheel wells as nicely.
My other car has 295/50/15 rear with 235/60/15 front, but lowered another 1” with 550 front coil springs. It tracks a lot better on highway ruts; it also has a dual-mount adjustable rear composite spring and heavier front sway bar that make it handle better. The extra lowering in front also makes the 235’s look more fitted to the wheel wells. It also has 5/16” wheel spacers all around and 10” wide wheels in back that give it a little wider track.
The aluminum wheels on the first car all were bent when I got surprised by a road-wide cut in the asphalt. Took the opportunity to change to 18x8 4” back space Torque Thrust II wheels with 255/45/18 (27” dia) Continental extreme contact tires all around. Adjusted suspension with 480/700 dual-rate Hyperco coil springs from Ridetech; 1” lower. Vansteel 330 composite spring rear with longer bolts; also 1” lower. It now tracks and corners better than ever, and the classic look of TT II wheels with shorter sidewalls look like they were made for the car.
Good to factor-in weight of new wheels and tires when shopping.
Charlie

Needs fender flares to get the backend down. Front fender lip 27” with 26” tire

It really depends on how you drive your car and how fast. Most drive their cars like old ladies these day not at all like these cars were driven back in the day. I still drive mine like I am in my 20s. I buy V speed rated tires. I am not really into top end speed these days but LOVE to run my cars through the gears at full throttle and this can mean out driving the speed rating of typical all season tires you guys are suggesting here. They will work fine for you if you don’t exceed the posted freeway speed limits.

nooooo, not sure where you are but posted highway speeds are 65 or 75 mph. The coopers are rated for 118 mph sustained speed. Im sure you arent running around our local highways maintaining 120mph speeds for 30 minutes to an hour....are you? JUst passing someone and possibly exceeding said speed limits for a short burst isnt going to heat the tire up to failure. I dont think you have a course you drive that you can get up past that on a long straight away do you?

This explains speed ratings to the rest of us.....and that the speed rating dose not equate to performance

I have 235&255s on my car but it’s lowered. 235s looked too small in my opinion before I lowered it.

Are you sure you’re not referring to this picture? The Rottweiler needs to grow a little bit.

We were playing with ride height and wheels/tires. Got the front coil-overs in, need to fine tune them, but the back just has a couple leaves removed. The rear coil-overs/offset trailing arms will need to wait for the Maxjax lift to be installed. And clean this damned garage!!!
