Default VIN Question

I apologize if this is in the forum somewhere. I couldn’t locate anything. Just wondering if there is a way of getting history on your car using the VIN? I have a 1969 and would love to be able to document it’s “life”.

You're not going to find much. The NCRS offers GM shipping report for where the car went when it left St. Louis - otherwise that's it for official records. However, using that you may be able to find the dealer still in business with their 50-year old records still in the basement. You may be able to use social media in that city to ask for anyone with knowledge of the car. Alternatively, you can work backwards with where you got the car from.

Is there any original paperwork with the car as far as the Protect-O-Plate, notations in the owner's manual, etc?

You could try posting the production number from your VIN here and on the NCRS forum as someone may recognize it.

Yes, sorry to say, but early VIN numbers will net you nothing. Perhaps you can deduce the day the car rolled off the assembly line and which engine, (in some cases) It was born with. That's about it.

Without prior owners history/knowledge, you won't find much information on your '69 Convertible other than it was born on January 28, 1969.

Are you talking about locating a paper trail (for maintenance, owner history, etc) from previous owners over the years? - No way. Can't carfax pre-81 cars to get any kind of history..... If you weren't provided anything by previous owners (or a seller if you are contemplating a purchase), then tracking down documentation will be extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible.

If you are just looking for info on the options the car came with (like what you would find on a tank sticker but with dealer info too), then you can order that. Check out the following forum post....

Try MMVTIS Through www.vehiclehistory.com it’ll tell you of times the title has transferred and in what state. Better yet, if you’re a Hagerty member you can request a vehicle history report on your VIN. Mine came back with every time the car was retitled, what state and the zip code the registered owner lived in.

Good luck and and happy hunting

Ken
