I have a questions on starters. I am restoring a 72 that was an automatic and converting to a 5sp. is there a difference between a automatic starter and a manual starters.
There is a difference in the stock th400 starter and the 4sp starters so I can only assume there would also be to the 5sp. Most likely to do with the tooth count on the gear that anything else but I'm not sure on that.

Different gear count starters mount differently that much I know. A lot of these mini starters come with a bunch of mounting holes so they apparently fit just about everything.
I guess the big difference will be in the tooth count on the ring gear.
The manual starter has a cast iron nose cone. The automatic starter uses an aluminum nose cone. They are not interchangeable.
I really like the Delco PMGR starter with the special bolts. I tried a remanufactured stock starter but it had an aftermarket replacement nose cone. I could not get it to work right so I tried the Delco PMGR. It is 100% new, weighs a LOT less and works great. About $100 or so from places like Rock Auto. If they do not put the special bolts in the box for you you can PM me for a pair. There is no "lookup" for the part but if you are interested in the part number, just ask and I will post it.
