Dipstick length .
I have a question for the collective , what is the correct length Dipstick for a 1984 vintage 454 block. I have read that it’s 23.5 inches , however the current dipstick is 23.5 inches and with a full 6 quarts in the pan there is no reading of oil on the stick. I tried to use the dipstick out of my 427 but it is quite a bit longer than the one in the 454, it also would not seat within the dipstick tube (too long)

The problem may not be the dipstick. The dipstick TUBE needs to be the correct length for the 'correct' dipstick to read properly. You may have a tube that is too long. Bottom line: the dipstick "parts" need to work together so that the FULL line on the dipstick is set at [about] the oil pan split line position. Depth of counter-bore (for the tube) in the engine block, length of tube and dipstick dimensions are come into play.
