Cowl area. Would there have been 1 person installing cowl screens & wiper arms or 2? And if a person on each side installing screens could they have possibly used different screws for some reason?
A trivial question but found this when taking the screens out. Anything could have happened over the years and can see the right side screen have been taken out at some point as a tab is broken and found a screwdriver down in the cowl area. Sure, they could have lost the screws but given the level of "professionalism' of prior work, seems odd they would have put metric screws in to replace the lost ones. Unless at a dealership? Which screws are the correct ones?
Okay, you have same screws as I do. Not sure why 2 different finishes & lengths would have been used but I sure do appreciate you posting those pics. Shiney on the right and phosphate on the left. Thanks.

Well just to muddle your query up further...in 78 we begin to see the use of metric bolts and nuts but they are color coded. In answer to your initial question, I would suspect workers wouls have worked from both sides and probably out of different part bins as the unit moved along the truck/rail line.
Yes there was a person on each side of the car assembling things out of different bins. It’s not uncommon to find different fasteners on each side. Gm had multiple suppliers for each fastener in 99% of cases. So not uncommon at all
I wonder if the fasteners on interpon's 79 are 2 different lengths also. If so, either the guy on the right side preferred short fasteners for those plenum screens or the left side guy wanted longer ones. For at least 2 model years. Or maybe the right screen was installed later down the line after vacuum line was ran?
It can be irritating working on a car that has a mix of SAE & Metric hardware. Thanks for your replies!

I have a reasonably original and no-hit 1978 built in February 1978. Bubba didn't get to it. I see no monkeying around in the cowl area on either side and those screws are exactly the same as Interpon's photo. The long dark on driver's side and short silver on passenger's side.
