Hello, question for fellow 82 CFI owners. My smog pump is making bearing noise. In the meantime while I source a new one, is it ok if i drive with the belt removed? Not concerned about potential MPG loss. Thanks
Don't think your fuel economy will suffer one bit. Injecting air into the exhaust is all about burning off unburned fuel. It's totally an emissions thing.
you can throw it all in the bin and never notice a difference. However, you will be destroying the planet you horrible polluter!
the added advantage of the smog pump was diluting the exhaust with fresh air so that it LOOKED like the engine was burning cleaner. these days it serves one purpose. looking original. either for emissions inspections or show points inspections...
One warning. If you run the vehicle long enough, you will start to see the AIR injection tubes and hoses and possibly even the pump deteriorate. Absent the air pressure a properly functioning pump provides, exhaust will push up into these tubes, which were not designed to handle hot, caustic exhaust gasses.

This air supplied extra oxygen to allow unburned hydrocarbons (HC) to continue burning in the exhaust manifold. It was not just a dilution.
