So I'm new to my 69 coupe. Bought it without engine or tranny. Tonight I was looking closer in the engine compartment and noticed some ugly cuts in the wheel area (see pics). Anyone have any idea why this may have been done? I'll include pics of the rest of the compartment, just in case there are clues elsewhere (and who doesn't like more pics, eh?)
Drivers side. Note the ugly metal work above the steering assy. No idea how much of this was stock, added by factory/dealer, after market, or just plain retromod Passenger side. More ugly cuts around the steering assy That wiring stock or custom? Didn't realize that the pipes go through the frame!
Yes pipes go through the crossmember.
You are new to this.
Cuts above steering? Above steering gear box I see nothing, above idler arm I see nothing.
Above your upper A arms, (Suspension). Yes those cut out are generally covered by rubber like splash shields. Which are missing making this area look ugly.
Wiring, some of it going down to where the starter should be looks like it could be factory. The rest. God knows who did what. Definitely not factory.
blank off plate where the hvac used to go. and inner fenders look altered. i don't recall their being bolted to the frame on the bottom. they are only supposed to attach to the frame at the rad support. i have a repro set out back. will take a look at them tonight.
A lot of weird (for lack of a better word) going on in that engine compartment. Nothing alarming just your typical backyard Hot Rod modification stuff that was common through the years. I see it has a large hood mod with pins at the rear, is the hood attached at all four coroners with pins? I wouldn't worry too much about what it should look like, just make what you got look good, a good cleaning, paint and some wire wrap would do wonders in that engine compartment.
Firewall doesn't have the openings for the wiper door actuator and switches and don't look like they have been covered, just not there makes me believe the firewall was replaced with a later model. The inner fenders look like something someone made not stock, including the brace rod there to the frame

Went and had a look at the other posts and the car is a heavily modified one with lots of different things going on (batwing rear, etc) so it's not that surprising to find this type of fabrication on the engine compartment.
In reality, cleaned up a bit here and there, add the rubber flaps where they should be and a surprising number of people will never notice.

Thanks all for looking and your comments. Confirms my suspicions. They started when I did the VIN lookup and found it’s a coupe; it has a removable hard top!
I’m going to go to the DMV personal plate registry and see if I can get some form of “CHIMERA”…
The stock size rubber flaps will not fit due to the extra wide A arm holes. The front bumper "horse collar" has numerous holes drilled in it also. Lou.

don't. not yet. just go to the dmv with the title and get it titled to you. you can never un-say something to the dmv. you can always say it later. then do more homework. find a frame vin and engine-trans vin. then vin-check them to make sure nothing is listed as stolen.
Gotcha. Good call. I have a fair amount of trust in the source; I got it from Steve Allen (SoCalVettes), who vouches for the builder as a 30+ year friend. But still, good call for a little patience and research.
