Default Tires for 70 model

Can you run 17 inch tires on a 70 model base? If not, what's the biggest tire you can run?

Diameter is not the problem. Width and backspace/offset are.

Stock is 8" wide with a -12MM offset.

Any problems with your tires rubbing or steering problems?

78’s had optional 255/60/15 tires. Front wheel wells were clearanced at the factory on some cars. Others on this forum have used that same size on earlier cars without clearance issues. Others have needed to do some trimming in the front wheel wells, but reported it as minimal and easy. Lots of old threads on wheels and tires. 18x8 wheels with 4” backspace fit easily. For rears, someone on CF used 18x9.5 with slightly deeper backspace without mods. For tires the original 27” diameter fills the wheel wells nicely. I replaced the original 255/60/15 with 255/45/18 on 18x8 TT II’s. Both the originals and new tire/wheels rub the frame in front on extreme turns, but only noticeable while parking.

255/45/18, 18x8 TT II’s, lowered 1”

I guess you mean 255 on the rear. Do they stick out of the wheel well? I would like to see a side view of them.

I love the look!
What is the back space on those?
Did you move the ebrake cable tab? Offset trailing arms?

Thank you,
Richard

Uhh, that’s what all wheelwell /fender flares look like on every corvette produced from 1970 through 1982. 68 & 69 didn’t have them.

American Racing part # VN2157861US
Back space 4.07. Stock trailing arms and did NOT move ebrake tab.
One thing I did add was hub centric mounting rings. Most American Racing wheels are
lug centric and if your not careful lining up the wheel when mounting them on the hubs, you could develop a wobble or vibration. All OE wheels are hub centric.
