In the process of having my 68 shipped to me last week, the keys got lost. I can order a new tumbler for the ignition switch but I do not see replacements for door locks.
1 - Does anyone know how to get the tumbler out of the ignition without having a key? If not, I will install new ignition switch with it.
2 - Any sources for 68 door lock tumbler replacements?
I called a locksmith and got a price of $450 to have a set of keys made. Hoping I don't have to allocate that much of the rebuild budget to this problem.
I'd really be hounding the transport company for the keys, and even then, be kind of leery with a set of keys out there floating around and an unknown number of people who know exactly where the car is...
Pedalmore please be aware that the 68 ignition key is also the same key used for the door locks. The other key unlocks the rear compartment door lock and the spare tire lock.
Someone that had that key could open your door lock and start the car. This could be premeditated. Lou.
Once you have your ignition key, it's actually pretty easy to make that key work in your doors, which you can do yourself. You can take the tumbler out of your door locks and move pins around until your key works.
If the door locks Have not been changed, the ignition key should work to lock and unlock the doors. Of course, if the door locks were changes the ignition most likely will not work. If the door lock keyway is the same as the ignition switch, you can remove the door locks, and have a Competent Locksmith Change the pins for a small charge. I took my door locks to a good locksmith for cleaning, but after a year or so the drivers side stop working, just worn out. I purchased new locks for both doors (same keyway) and then had my Locksmith key them to be the same as the ignition. For 1973 year Corvettes, the ignition and door locks, plus rear glove box are the Same. My car doesn’t have a lock on the spare tire. The alarm key is different.
