Default Steering column question

Last fall to get my dash apart, I took out the bolts that hold the steering column up in place. Now that I am putting it all back together, I am finding that the column does not want to go up so that I can bolt it up. I am hoping someone here knows what I should be looking for to see what the issue might be.

Last summer when you took those 2 bolts out, did you then just let the steering column dangle, or did you take the steering column? Take a picture of the end of the column in the engine bay.

I just let it dangle. My main concern was to make room to get the gauges out as I needed to replace the mechanical tach with an electronic one.

I think what @kansas123 was hinting at was that your lower steering column bushing may now be damaged.

You might be able to get everything to line up if you loosen the bolts on the horseshoe collar that holds the lower end of the steering column, but maybe not. I'd start there, though.

Otherwise, are there any cables in the way?

How will I know if it has been damaged? What should I look for?

It might be hard to see if there is any play in the bushing while it is still connected, unless you can see it when a helper turns a wheel, but you'll need it bolted up for that.

It's more of a "while you are in there" replacement item.
