Default Outer window felt

I have a '78 coupe and I need to replace the outer felt ( or sweep) on the left side. I have the stainless trim piece in good shape but the rubber on the other half is trash. I am looking for these and some vendors are selling ones with a wide piece of felt and they note that this is correct. I don't really care about correct but both sides of my car only have narrow rubber at the top edge and show no felt or anything left of where felt may have been. And they are original pieces. any advice or suggestions about replacement pieces? Are the wider felt ones causing some people to have in/out alignment issues as I have read about? Hope I am not opening a can of worms here...Thx.

FWIW, try to locate NOS, that was the only way I could get my 69's windows to roll up aligned correctly. You will need to get outside the existing repro supply chain. A wider felt might well be problematical. The other issue is incorrect attachment points, you'll have to match old vs new so I'm sure you know, don't throw your originals away until you have a working installation.

If you can’t find NOS wipes, be prepared for a more painful install. Years ago I bought a set for my 73 convertible and sure enough the plastic binding post did not align with the original outside wipes, also some of the post on the new wipes were not attached correctly, they just fell off. The vendor was extremely helpful and went through their stock to find a set that was not defective. Still, I had to use a Dremel with a small grinding drum to make new holes in the door fiberglass as the new wipe attachment points were different than the original ones. That experience convinced me to look at NOS whenever possible, even if the cost is a little more. You will have to loosen the window glass and remove the two top alignment brackets with the worn out felt on them, to get the tiny screws out.

I think I found what I need, original not NOS but appear to be in good shape. Will let you know when I get my hands on them. And I do save EVERRyTHING until I am done, even then it's hard for me to throw stuff away!

If it's truly the real deal your reward is not having to look at something like this and not know why you can't adjust this away. I could not believe the difference that my NOS find for the felt made, window magically rolled right up after the re-install..

I got my replacement window felt yesterday and it is used but fit is perfect. I am really confused about this stuff. The car ( a 78) has identical sweeps on both sides. Rubber, not felt, a little less than 1/4" wide. Same on each side and I have no evidence that they have been replaced. That is why I thought they were ORGINAL. But the piece that came to me is actually FELT. It is only about 1/8" wide but the felt goes down about an inch inside the door. Can one of you explain the differences to me? Why what I thought was original is now NOT considered original? The biggest problem now is that I will know that the r & L sides are different. My original ia on the right in the pics. No one else will ever notice it but I will! Thanks.

I can't help with your quandary as to originality and our cars are almost a decade apart. All I can say is, that until I found a NOS part, I could not make the window roll up to where it belonged. And I got a lot of friendly advice on this when I posted.

I've got rubber on my 78 and I'm pretty sure they are original.

I guess the true test as too how good it is will come when it's time to adjust the windows. It might be one of those parts that was superseded with the felt one and that is all that's out there. I do know that when I took the right door off and apart it had never been touched by human hands after it was manufactured, and pretty sure this one has the same history. I also had the same rubber piece.thanks to all.
